Family-owned for 30 years, USDA Certified Organic, powered by solar energy, and made with ingredients you can actually pronounce. Here's why Badger Balm belongs on the Nalu platform.
Every so often we come across a brand that makes us think: this is exactly what we built Nalu to find. Badger Balm is one of those brands.
Founded in 1995 in rural New Hampshire, Badger has spent three decades doing something remarkably simple and remarkably difficult at the same time: making organic skincare products with the fewest, cleanest ingredients possible, and refusing to compromise on that principle even as the company has grown from a kitchen table operation to a globally distributed brand sold in over 15 countries.
We're proud to now stock them on Nalu, and we wanted to introduce you to the brand properly, because the story behind Badger is as good as the products themselves.
It Started With A Carpenter And A Tin Of Beeswax
In the mid-1990s, Bill Whyte was working as a carpenter in New England. If you've ever spent a winter working with your hands outdoors, you'll know what that does to your skin. Bill's hands were constantly cracking and splitting in the cold, and nothing he tried seemed to help.
One evening, he mixed up a simple balm from beeswax and olive oil, added some healing herbs, and applied it to his hands. It worked. It worked so well that he started sharing it with everyone he knew.
He originally wanted to call it "Bear Paw," but the name was already taken. According to the story, he put a tin under his pillow, slept on it, and woke up with a new name: Badger. With help from his wife Katie, he started filling tins by hand in their kitchen, packing them into homemade wooden boxes, and driving around to local hardware stores selling them out of his work van.
That original product, Badger Balm for Hardworking Hands, is still in production today. It's still made with the same philosophy: simple ingredients, blended with care, designed to genuinely help. You can still buy it on our site, and it's still brilliant.
What Makes Badger Different
The natural skincare market in 2026 is enormous and noisy. Hundreds of brands claim to be "natural" or "clean" or "organic." The difference with Badger is that they can actually prove it.
Over 90% of Badger's products are USDA Certified Organic, which is one of the most stringent organic certifications in the world. Products carrying the USDA Organic seal must contain at least 95% organic ingredients, and the entire manufacturing facility is subject to regular inspection. Badger was one of the first body care companies in the US to achieve this certification, and they've maintained it for nearly two decades.
They're also a certified B Corporation, meaning they've been independently verified to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Badger has been named B Corp Best for the World multiple times, recognising them as one of the highest-performing B Corps globally for environmental impact.
Their manufacturing facility in Gilsum, New Hampshire is a LEED Silver certified post-and-beam building powered by solar energy. The products are made in the USA. The company is now led by Bill's daughters, Emily Schwerin-Whyte and Rebecca Hamilton, making it a second-generation, women-owned family business.
These aren't marketing claims bolted onto a label. They're structural commitments embedded into how the company operates at every level.
The Sunscreen Question
One of the main reasons we wanted to bring Badger to Nalu is their approach to sun protection, because it addresses a problem that most people don't realise exists.
The majority of sunscreens sold in the UK and globally are chemical sunscreens. They work by absorbing UV radiation through synthetic compounds like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate, which are absorbed into the skin and bloodstream. A 2019 study by the FDA, published in JAMA, found that the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the blood at levels that exceed the FDA's safety threshold after just a single application. A follow-up 2020 study confirmed these findings across multiple formulations.
There's also the environmental side. Oxybenzone and octinoxate have been shown to contribute to coral reef bleaching and damage to marine ecosystems. Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, and Palau have all enacted legislation restricting these chemicals in sunscreens for this reason.
Badger's sunscreens take a completely different approach. They use non-nano zinc oxide as their sole active ingredient. Zinc oxide is a mineral that sits on the surface of the skin and physically reflects UV rays rather than absorbing them. It provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation, it's considered safe for coral reefs, and it doesn't get absorbed into the bloodstream.
Badger was one of the first companies in the US to produce a truly natural mineral sunscreen, and their formulations have consistently been rated among the safest and most effective by the Environmental Working Group's annual sunscreen guide since its launch in 2007.
We stock three of their sunscreens on Nalu. The Active Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 30 is designed for outdoor activity and sport with 40 minutes of water resistance. The Kids Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40 is formulated specifically for children's sensitive skin. And the Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40 provides gentle, high-factor protection for the youngest and most delicate skin.
All three use non-nano zinc oxide, organic plant oils, and beeswax. No synthetic fragrances, no chemical UV filters, no parabens. Just mineral protection that works.
Beyond Sunscreen: The Wellness Range
Badger's roots are in balms, and their wellness range is where the brand's philosophy really shines. These are products built around the idea that a few carefully chosen natural ingredients, blended well, can do more than a long list of synthetic ones.
The Sleep Balm is a perfect example. It's a blend of organic beeswax, extra virgin olive oil, castor oil, lavender, bergamot, ginger, and balsam fir. You apply a small amount to your temples, pulse points, or upper lip before bed, and the aromatherapeutic blend helps calm the mind and ease you into sleep. No melatonin, no supplements, no complicated routine. Just a simple, organic balm that does what it says.
The Aromatic Chest Rub takes a similar approach to respiratory comfort. Made with eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, and tea tree in an organic oil and beeswax base, it's a natural alternative to the petroleum-based chest rubs most of us grew up with. It's the kind of product you reach for during cold season or when congestion makes sleep difficult.
The Foot Balm brings peppermint and tea tree oil together to cool, soothe, and condition tired feet. Paired with their Cuticle Care balm for nails and cuticles, these are quiet, functional products that address real everyday needs without unnecessary complexity.
The Everyday Essentials
Rounding out our Badger range are the products you'll find yourself reaching for daily.
Their Classic Lip Balms are USDA Certified Organic and made with just four or five ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, castor oil, and natural flavouring. No petroleum, no synthetic wax, no artificial fragrance. They come in Vanilla Madagascar and Unscented, and we also carry two gift sets with four balm varieties in each.
The Aloe Vera Gel is another standout. Made with Fair Trade certified organic aloe, it's designed for after-sun care, minor skin irritation, and general skin soothing. It pairs naturally with the sunscreen range for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Why Badger Belongs On Nalu
At Nalu, every brand we stock has to pass a simple test: does it genuinely help, is the quality beyond question, and does the company behind it operate with integrity?
Badger passes on all three counts. Their products are formulated with a level of simplicity and transparency that's genuinely rare in the skincare industry. Their organic certifications aren't aspirational labels. They're verified, maintained, and taken seriously. Their environmental commitments, from solar-powered manufacturing and reef-safe formulations to B Corp certification and Fair Trade sourcing, aren't marketing angles. They're the way the company has been built from the ground up for three decades.
And their origin story, a carpenter trying to fix his cracked hands, is the kind of honest, practical beginning that resonates with everything Nalu stands for. The best products often come from someone solving a real problem for themselves, and then sharing the solution with everyone else.
We're delighted to bring Badger to the UK through Nalu. Whether you're looking for a safer sunscreen for your family, an organic sleep aid that actually works, or a lip balm made from ingredients you can count on one hand, this is a brand worth getting to know.
